Tatami Guide book
Size:
Customizable. The maximum size is 1950mm x 970mm.
Thickness:
Available from 15mm to 55mm. In traditional Japanese-style rooms, the floor is often built one step lower so the tatami can sit flush with the surrounding flooring. Thinner tatami is often used to reduce the risk of tripping, especially for children and the elderly.
If you're placing the tatami directly on a flat surface, I recommend a thinner mat (15–17mm) to minimize the height difference.
Surface Material Options:
-
Natural Igusa Grass
-
Washi (Japanese paper) coated
-
Advantages:
-
Natural Grass:
-
Has the unique, calming scent of igusa (rush grass)
-
Develops a beautiful patina over time as it ages naturally
-
-
Washi Type:
-
Water-resistant
-
Does not change color with age
-
Available in various color options
-
Disadvantages:
-
Natural Grass:
-
Prone to mold in high humidity, but good ventilation solves this
-
Not waterproof; stains can occur if it gets wet
-
Once it ages and turns brown, scratches and stains may become more noticeable
-
-
Washi Type:
-
No major disadvantages. It’s a relatively newer material compared to natural grass, but has been widely used for over 20 years.
-
It has a pleasant texture and is now a very popular choice.
